This course has been designed from the ground up to give both novices and digital audio buffs all of the essentials necessary to begin their own recording sessions. Upon completion of the course, you will be able to pick microphones, get great sounds to tape, and perform a mixdown.
The first semester (weeks one to six) will cover basic studio concepts, setting up, recording and mixing various instruments and their respective tonal and mechanical characteristics.
You will be recording real bands and mixing real tracks. We will setup, tune, mic, record, mix, and master these tracks both as an integral part of the learning process and as your final mixdown exam.
The second semester (weeks seven to twelve), while continuing to delve more deeply into all the subjects broached in the first semester, will focus more and more on creating the final, produced mix. As this semester draws to a close you will delve more and more into mixdowns of songs, supervised by your instructor, in preparation for your Final Mix Exam.
As far as we know, The SRA is the only institution of its kind to actually grade its students on their ability to perform a real audio engineering task -mixdown; as opposed to a written exam. The SRA offers both methods of ascertaining your knowledge level upon completion.
